Bordeaux

Enjoying an international reputation, Bordeaux region is the French largest designated vineyard and one of the most prestigious thanks to its famous Grand Crus. The region offers various blended wines made of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon for the red wines (85% of the wine production) and made of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc in what concerns white wines.

The Bordeaux wine expansion comes from the European growing exchanges which started during the 12th century. European powers increased their demand in wine, stimulating wine makers to ameliorate their production. Then, during the 19th century, free trade establishment and railway creation contributed to expand the commerce of wine.

The first Medoc and Sauternes ranking appeared in 1855. The following years, vineyards suffer a lot from diseases, economic crisis and world wars.

After WWII, oenology is making relevant progress and the region is proud of its exceptional vintages (1961, 1982, 1989, 1990…). French and foreign companies invest in Bordeaux vineyards.

Bordeaux has a marine climate with hot summer and cool winter. The ocean brings heavy rain. The Bordeaux region can be divided into 2 regions:

- The Rive Gauche (Left Bank), mainly composed of gravel soils is well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The Rive Gauche is divided into 3 sub-regions : Médoc, Graves and Sauternes. From North to South, the main Medoc appellations are the following : St Estèphe, Pauillac, St Julien, Moulis-en-Médoc, Margaux.

- The Rive Droite (Right Bank), which soils are mainly made of clay is well suited to Merlot. St Émilion, Figeac and Pomerol constitute its 3 main sub-regions.
