Missionaries in the mid 19th century planted the first vines. Hawke's Bay is now becoming an important place for full bodied red wines. There is an estimated 74 wineries located across Hawke's Bay. 80% of New Zealand’s red wines are produced in Hawkes Bay, and especially Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz grapes. Rich and complex chardonnays also grow there. Climate in Hawke’s Bay is warm and maritime.
